5G Service to Focus on Industrial Zones as a Priority.

The objective of the 5G network service is not just to ensure full coverage but to focus on areas that can yield the greatest advantages, such as industrial zones. According to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, the ministry has pinpointed more than 67 industrial zones that will be prioritized for the rollout of the technology.

"The objective of the 5G network is not solely to achieve complete coverage, but rather to concentrate on areas that can derive the greatest benefits, such as industrial zones. "This approach aims to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and factories to take advantage of advanced technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data, which demand fast and secure internet connectivity."

"Our primary focus moving forward is to ensure that the sectors poised to gain the most from 5G technology can fully capitalize on its benefits," Fahmi stated to reporters after attending a Chinese New Year contribution event at the Taman Seri Sentosa morning market on Sunday. Providing further details, Fahmi mentioned that the deployment of the 5G network service will be a key topic of discussion at the upcoming Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council (MED4IR) meeting on February 12.

"This meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, will cover various aspects, including whether to proceed with the implementation under the first phase led by Digital Nasional Bhd or transition to the second phase under U Mobile," he explained. On Saturday (January 18), Fahmi revealed that Malaysia had achieved 82.4% 5G coverage in populated areas by December 2024, positioning the country among the fastest globally in expanding communication access in recent years.

He further highlighted that 5G adoption among the population reached 53.35% during the same period, reflecting a nearly fivefold increase compared to 10.8% in October 2023. At the Sunday event, Fahmi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, announced that over 700 families received contributions to help alleviate their financial burdens and bring joy during the Chinese New Year celebrations. In his address, he urged the public, particularly the elderly, to remain cautious against scammers who often exploit festive seasons to commit fraud.

"Scammers tend to observe user behavior closely. For instance, ahead of the haj season, they target individuals saving in Tabung Haji. Similarly, during Chinese New Year, they might focus on those celebrating the festival," he cautioned. He advised the public to be cautious when receiving calls from unfamiliar numbers. "If the call's content seems unreasonable or suspicious, don't fall for it easily. If you suspect fraud, report it immediately by calling 997," he added.
