MCMC received 4,699 content removal requests for online gambling and scams in the first week of 2025.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has handled 4,699 requests for content removal related to online gambling and scams since January 1, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

"Between January 1 and today (Tuesday, January 7), we received 4,699 requests, with 72% involving online gambling and 14% related to scams," Fahmi shared during a press conference following the inauguration of the International Regulatory Conference 2025 on Tuesday. He emphasized the government's proactive measures in addressing emerging threats, such as scams utilizing AI-generated manipulated videos and images, commonly known as "deepfakes."

To strengthen efforts, amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, passed in December, have enhanced the legal framework to combat these challenges. "Our priority is tackling AI-driven deepfake scams. We've introduced legislative updates in Parliament and are working closely with social media platform operators," Fahmi explained. He also announced plans for upcoming workshops involving the MCMC and social media platforms to devise effective and sustainable solutions. "These sessions will focus on immediate actions and strategies for a comprehensive approach to this complex issue," he added.
