Grab’s Ecosystem Boosts Malaysia’s Economic Growth

A recent report by EconWorks, a local economic consultancy, highlights the significant impact of Grab's services on Malaysia's economy. In 2023 alone, Grab contributed RM9.9 billion, accounting for approximately 0.5% of the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

How Grab Drives Economic Growth

According to EconWorks Managing Director Wan Khatina Nawawi, platform-based companies like Grab create flexible income opportunities and support the digital transformation of small businesses.

"Over the past twelve years, Grab has played a crucial role in boosting economic benefits for communities across Malaysia. For every RM1 generated through Grab transactions, an additional RM1.50 is created in broader economic activity, demonstrating its positive impact on millions of Malaysians."

The report analyzes Grab's direct and indirect economic contributions, particularly for gig workers and businesses that rely on the platform for income.

Key Findings from the Report

Grab contributed RM9.9 billion to Malaysia's economy in 2023, making up 0.5% of the country's GDP.

Grab's platform supported up to 277,237 earning opportunities, offering income streams for drivers, merchants, and supply chain workers.

Household incomes increased by RM3.7 billion thanks to Grab's income-generating opportunities.

A Thriving Digital Economy

The report underscores Malaysia's business-friendly environment, which fosters the growth of digital economy players like Grab.

"By measuring these contributions, this study provides a detailed picture of how Grab interacts with Malaysia's wider economy, reinforcing economic growth," Wan Khatina added.

Government Collaboration for Future Growth

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo also acknowledged Grab's collaboration with the government and industry players as an important factor in driving Malaysia's economic growth and sustainable development.

With on-demand services and digital platforms becoming essential to daily life, Grab's impact on income generation, business growth, and overall economic activity continues to expand, solidifying its role in Malaysia's digital economy.
