Playtest: Half-Life 2 RTX – Is It Worth the Hype?

The legendary Half-Life 2 just got an RTX makeover – and like any tech-curious gamer with a decent rig, I had to try it out. With ray tracing, global illumination, shiny new textures, and all the eye-candy you can imagine, it should be a feast for the senses. But after spending some time with it, let's just say… I walked away more puzzled than impressed.

How to Get It

Want to try it out for yourself? If you already own the original Half-Life 2 on Steam, the RTX version is completely free. Just head over to your Steam Library, look for "Half-Life 2 RTX," add it to your library, and begin the installation. No purchase required – just your curiosity and a decent GPU.

Test Setup

Here's the gear I used for this playtest:

This setup still holds its own in 2025, and most modern games run great on it at high to ultra settings. But this time? Not so much.

Performance Benchmarks (1080p)

That's right. A game originally built for early 2000s hardware now dips under 30 FPS when cranked to ultra on a fairly strong modern GPU. Even medium and high settings don't deliver a fully smooth experience.

First Impressions

Visually, yes – it looks fantastic. The lighting is dramatic, shadows are deeper, and reflections bounce around like they were born yesterday. But the cost? Brutal. The game doesn't feel optimized at all. The moment you crank up the visuals, performance tanks hard.

Is It Just Me, or... NVIDIA?

Let's face it – this might just be NVIDIA being NVIDIA. The timing of this release alongside the push for their RTX 50 series cards feels a little too convenient. It's as if the game was tuned just enough to frustrate 30 series users, while making the new cards look like saviors.

Marketing move or genuine overshoot on the graphics goals? You decide.

Final Verdict

Unless future patches bring in better optimization or improved DLSS implementation, Half-Life 2 RTX feels like a tech demo rather than a full-fledged experience – especially for players without cutting-edge GPUs.

Would I recommend it right now? Only if you're curious. Otherwise, maybe wait and see if they patch the performance.
