Cigarettes After Sex (CAS) Live Concert in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia in January 2025

On January 11th, 2025, I attended the CAS concert held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. It was an event that I had mixed feelings about, and I'll attempt to share my experience in detail. Despite some organizational hiccups and personal preferences that weren't met, the evening offered moments worth reflecting on.

The turnout for the concert was astounding, with thousands of people gathering to enjoy the event. It was clear that CAS had a strong following, particularly among younger music enthusiasts. However, the massive crowd brought with it logistical challenges, particularly with parking. It took considerable effort to find a spot, and I ended up parking approximately 3 kilometers away from the venue. The long walk to the Landing at KL Base, which replaced the original venue at Sunway Lagoon, added an unexpected physical strain to the evening.

The venue change itself was a last-minute adjustment, and it showed in certain aspects of the event. While the new venue had a captivating aesthetic—a dark and smokey ambiance that suited the concert's vibe—the rushed nature of the transition was evident in the sound setup. The event, scheduled to begin at 8:00 PM, started late at around 8:45 PM, adding to the sense of disorganization.

One major letdown was the sound system. Unlike other concerts I've attended, this one had noticeable issues with sound crackling and popping. It seemed that insufficient time had been allocated for proper sound mixing and setup, likely due to the venue change. This compromised the overall audio experience, which is a crucial element of any live performance.

As for the music itself, it didn't align with my personal taste. I've always been a fan of classic rock bands like Deep Purple, Metallica, and Muse, so CAS's style felt lackluster to me. The songs leaned heavily on basic strumming or plucking, and the guitar work, while clean and reverb-heavy, lacked the technical flair I admire. The use of a single-coil setup, possibly from a Fender Stratocaster, was evident, but the performance didn't do justice to the instrument's potential.

The concert's appeal seemed to lie in its ability to connect with younger generations, who appeared to enjoy the simplistic melodies and laid-back vibe. While the band's energy was palpable, it felt hyped rather than genuine. There was minimal engagement with the audience, particularly with the local crowd in Kuala Lumpur. Aside from a few cursory "Thank you" and "Good night" remarks, there wasn't much effort to build a connection, unlike other bands that make a point to show genuine appreciation for Malaysian fans.

To me, the songs came across as lullabies—pleasant but unremarkable. While that's a subjective opinion, it's worth noting that live performances are often judged by their ability to evoke strong emotions or leave a lasting impression. Unfortunately, CAS's setlist didn't achieve that for me.

During the concert, the band performed and uploaded three live videos: "Apocalypse," "K," and "Sunsetz." These tracks showcased the essence of their musical style, with "Apocalypse" featuring a moody and atmospheric build-up, "K" leaning into a rhythmic and melodic vibe, and "Sunsetz" closing with a softer, contemplative tone. While the performances captured the energy of the night, they still lacked the depth and complexity that could have resonated more with a broader audience.

That said, the concert wasn't without its merits. The general admission tickets were priced reasonably between RM290 and RM330, with VIP tickets at RM450. Considering the turnout and production scale, it was good value for money. The visual effects and overall stage setup were commendable, even if the sound system fell short.

Overall, the CAS concert was a mixed bag. While the aesthetic atmosphere and crowd energy were highlights, the organizational flaws, sound issues, and my personal disconnect with the music left me underwhelmed. For fans of CAS and their genre, it was likely an enjoyable evening, but for someone like me, with a different musical palate, it was a night of mediocrity punctuated by fleeting moments of satisfaction.
