Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on local cybersecurity professionals to work hand-in-hand with the government to enhance Malaysia's digital defense systems. Speaking during the National Cyber Security Meeting (No. 1/2025) held on Tuesday, he stressed the importance of building a more comprehensive cybersecurity ecosystem through local expertise.
Confidence in Local Talent
According to the Prime Minister's senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, the government has strong confidence in the abilities of local experts, including those from educational institutions and the tech industry.
"There's real strength in collaboration," said Tunku Nashrul in a daily briefing streamed live on the Prime Minister's Facebook page. "By working together, agencies and academic institutions can help ensure the country is always prepared to handle cybersecurity threats, both now and in the future."
A National Priority
Cybersecurity, the Prime Minister emphasized, is no longer optional—it's a national priority. Tunku Nashrul noted that everyone has a role to play: the government, the private sector, and the general public must all contribute to ensuring Malaysia stays resilient in the face of rising cyberthreats.
Encouraging Progress
During the meeting, officials reviewed three major presentations, one of which highlighted a positive trend: a decline in cybersecurity incidents from 2023 to 2024. This was seen as a sign that ongoing efforts are starting to bear fruit.
Cyber Security Act 2024 Updates
The meeting also touched on the progress of the Cyber Security Act 2024 (Act 854). The legislation has been further strengthened by appointing a new head for the National Critical Information Infrastructure sector, along with bringing in additional cybersecurity experts to support the country's cyber resilience.
Upcoming Cybersecurity Events
Looking ahead, Malaysia is preparing to host two significant cybersecurity events this May. The first is the Cyber Games, and the second is a high-level ASEAN conference on cybercrime. These events will be organized in collaboration with the National Cyber Security Agency, the Council of Europe, and Interpol.
A Call to Action
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the Prime Minister's message is clear: Malaysia needs its local cybersecurity experts more than ever. By working together, the nation can build a safer, more secure future in cyberspace.
